Rotary Scholarship Program

Rotary District 5450 offers scholarships for Graduate Scholars who reside, study, or work within the district, generally encompassing the Denver/Boulder Metro Areas of Colorado, USA. These scholarships are intended for those planning to study outside the United States.

Overview

The Rotary Scholarships program is the oldest and perhaps the most renowned initiative of the Rotary Foundation. Since its establishment in 1947, over 40,000 individuals have studied abroad through this program, covering over 150 countries. Known initially as Ambassadorial Scholarships, it was the largest privately funded international scholarships program, with up to 800 scholarships awarded annually for study abroad.

Ambassadorial Scholars acted as goodwill ambassadors, promoting cultural exchange and fostering long-lasting international friendships. Many alumni have ascended to significant leadership roles in government, industry, and various professions within their home countries.

Program Evolution

In 2017, the Rotary Foundation’s mission was updated to promote world understanding, goodwill, and peace by improving health, supporting education, and alleviating poverty. Consequently, the Ambassadorial Scholarship program was replaced with a new Rotary Scholarship program aligned with the revised mission.

Today, Rotary Scholarships are awarded to students with strong experience in humanitarian service who wish to enhance their background through graduate studies in one of Rotary’s seven identified Areas of Focus. These scholars are selected based on work experience, proposed studies, and future career plans, evaluated in light of Rotary’s new motto: “Doing Good in the World.”

Areas of Focus

The seven Areas of Focus covered by Rotary Scholarships are:

  • Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution
  • Disease Prevention and Treatment
  • Water and Sanitation
  • Maternal and Child Health
  • Basic Education and Literacy
  • Economic and Community Development
  • Environmental Sustainability
