FOR THE SERVICE THEY PROVIDE TO US...

Most of us agree that military personnel provide a tremendous service, sacrificing their time and blood so citizens can live in peace and freedom. The question is:  How can we possibly repay them and their families for the sacrifices they all make?

While it may be impossible to fully compensate them, the Rotary Club of Englewood is taking a small step in that direction through their Military and Veterans Appreciation and Support Program.

During the 2017 holidays and first half of 2018, 33 military families needing a helping hand received assistance from by our program. Funding was obtained from Englewood club member donations and a District Grant. Commanders from military bases in Colorado Springs identified families experiencing particular needs.
Each recipient family’s specific needs and requests (clothing, food, toys) were determined.  Items requested ranged from baby food, diapers, winter clothing, bicycles, holiday food and more.
Englewood Rotarians shopped for and gift wrapped clothing and toy items for each family. North Colorado Springs Rotary Club members helped to purchase food and organize the tailored packages. Military personnel from Schriever Air Force Base and U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs assisted in delivering the packages.

Per the Master Sergeant from Schriever AFB coordinating their portion of the project: “The support of the Rotary Club of Englewood was AMAZING! I’ve talked to my Airmen that your team so generously gave to and they are so thankful!  Families almost came to tears as they would not have been able to afford to have a Christmas without your support. Thank you so much to the entire team at Rotary. You guys have definitely made a huge difference to families here at Schriever AFB and we are beyond thankful to have partnered with you to make this happen.”

Shortly after delivery of the packages to the families, Club President, Patty Burnett, received a telephone call from one of the recipient families. Patty described the conversation as follows: “I received a call from a woman who said she was a recipient of our holiday support. She was choked up and then sobbing, saying what a hard year the family had had, and how much they appreciated our gifts. She said that at least three times. And then she said ‘When we get back on our feet, maybe we can help YOU next year’”

The Rotary Club of Englewood is actively trying to expand the program this year.  We are seeking funding from additional donors as well as labor volunteers from other clubs to assist in implementation of the project.
