APRILĀ 2016
REGISTER NOW FOR THE DISTRICT CONFERENCE!

Conference speakers are going to educate, inspire, motivate and above all make you proud to be a Rotarian.

This year's conference theme is "Be a gift to the world, lead with your heart".  Speakers include District Rotarians, lnteractors, ambassadorial scholars and Rl dignitaries.  They will all fill your heart with their outstanding service to others.  Entertainment will include Lannie Garrett and her band and the District 5450 Area 8 singers.

Our keynote speaker, Tommy Spaulding, has definite ties to Rotary. A recent review by Buddy Brown, President, Independent Hardee's Franchise Association said "I've never seen anyone connect with and move an audience like Tommy does. His real-life stories speak into our own aspirations as leaders.” You will all want to get a signed copy of his latest book, "Heart Led Leader."

And so, come and help us celebrate this Rotary year.  The conference price is right, rooms at Beaver Run start at $99 per night, free parking, and there is a reduced  registration fee for first time full conference  attendees.  Go to the District web site for registration information: www.rotary5450.org

My thanks to our District Sponsors and advertisers:  Denver Southeast Rotary Foundation, Highlands Ranch Rotary, Sound Relief Hearing Center, eClub One Rotary, Neil D. Lorenzo CPA, Vaughn Law Offices and Robert Larson.

BEACH PARTY!

Sunday Afternoon - After the District Conference

The satellite members of the Rotary Club of Summit County are pleased to invite all participants in the District 5450's annual conference to come prepared to have a little fun on Sunday afternoon, April 24, beginning as soon as the Conference has ended and continuing through mid afternoon. Rotary's Second Annual Beach Party will happen at the base of the Arapahoe Basin ski area, located on Highway 6 between Keystone and Loveland Pass in Summit County and on the way home to the Front Range communities. We have a double space reserved on A Basin's famous "beach", and will provide music, beverages, grilled burgers and sausage, and other snacks.

Drop by for a little optional skiing or riding.  Hang out for lunch and relax with your fellow Rotarians.  Beachwear costumes optional.  See you there!

IMMEDIATE INVOLVEMENT HELPS RETENTION

One of this year’s goals for our District Membership Team has been to increase the amount of communication, outreach and engagement with our clubs. Regularly I receive an email with a comment or a question from the Rotary Club of Parker’s Membership Chair, Kam Breitenbach. She is a dynamo when it comes to membership and best practices. So, I asked her to share with all of us some of their “secrets” to their success.

The Rotary Club of Parker has taken membership seriously.  Secretary Gloria Beckley asked two new members if they would rotate helping her each week check in new members and guests and make announcements.  This got them involved right away and the ability to get to know Rotarian’s names.

We sent out membership ideas to our members to encourage them to bring a guest and help grow our club.

AN OPEN LETTER FROM ECLUB ONE PRESIDENT

Your District has started something absolutely brilliant!.  You have been the pioneer in this and it took over 3 years for Rotary International to be approved:  a club that meets on line, no more meals to pay.  Of the three hundred e-clubs in the world, in all shapes and forms, we are the only one without any set time and day for meetings.  Rotary eClub One is privileged to have members in all parts of the world.  Because of this geographical diversity, we are able to serve easily in many countries.  But also because of the same geographical diversity, we do not have club-sponsored projects.  Our individual members, often with the cooperation of their terra club members, conduct all our service and actions, all approved by eClub One of course.  For these projects, we offer grants to our members.

We are a very active club with always a member awake ready to serve.  How many clubs in the District, or anywhere in the world for that matter, can claim over one thousand visitors per week?  How many clubs can claim to log over 5,600 hours of service in just half a year?  Rotary International requested that we keep track of members serving in their own community and that we achieve at least 12 hours of service in a given quarter.  We are very proud to have logged 85 hours of service per member in each of the last 2 quarters.

Get more information from President Elect ‘Buchi or myself or on the display table of the District Conference Club Exhibit Hall.

WORLD PEACE PROGRAM NOMINATIONS

On behalf of the District 5450 World Peace Programs Subcommittee, we are very pleased to announce that our District may nominate individuals to compete in the world competition for either of two exciting initiatives by The Rotary Foundation and Rotary International:

1) Up to 60 applicants are selected annually to study at one of the six Rotary Centers for International Studies.
2) Up to 25 (generally 20) of these fellows are selected to study at the Rotary Center - Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand for one three month program beginning in either January or July.

Clubs should begin their search for applicants immediately.  They need to conduct their interview and selection process January through April.  Completed applications with your club’s endorsement must be received by May 15, 2016, and applicant interviews will be held June 10, 2016.

Complete information and details can be found in the attached letter.  If you have questions please contact PDG Dan Clark, 303-424-2967, danvclark@gmail.com.

POLIO COMMITTEE REPORT - LAST CASE SOON?

I have always been concerned about what I call "kiss of death" predictions like who will win an election or win a game. However, I do want all to know that it is being widely predicted that 2016 will see the last case of polio in the world.  If so, you might want to know how this 'end game' will be played and understand why we Rotarians need to continue our efforts. The World Health Organization has produced six short videos for our viewing.  They do an excellent job of describing what is in front of us.

COSTA RICA TEAM IS BACK - AND WHAT A STORY TO TELL!

Seven members of our club, along with 2 from the South Jeffco Club, teamed up with Peace Corp Volunteers (PCV) and the Give a Book Foundation to deliver books to some very needy children.  This is a new partnership between Rotary and PCV.

How it works - PCV assesses the need and Rotary works to fulfill it.  PCV stays with the project throughout and upon book delivery, achieves hero status in the community, making it easier to implement changes.  Philip, a PCV, created “Jump Start”, which teaches English to 7th graders.  The biggest school drop-out rate is after 7th grade.  Students move on to a big school and must have English language skills.  This program gives smaller country children a chance to succeed and build self-esteem.

LITERACY IS POWER! LITERACY SEMINAR A GREAT SUCCESS!

The District Literacy Conference was held on Feb. 27 at the Daniels Fund Building in Denver. The theme was Literacy is Power! Thirty-eight Rotarians attended and heard a variety of speakers who expanded perspectives on literacy project opportunities here in Colorado and abroad. Many attendees have since sent emails confirming the value of the conference, the new ideas they left with for their clubs, and the enjoyment of engaging with other Rotary club members throughout the district.

IFCS NIBBLES & SIPS GALA

Forty-nine Rotarians from both the noon and morning clubs attended the 2016 Nibbles & Sips fundraiser Saturday, February 27 where Highlands Ranch Rotary was the event honoree!  Besides visiting food & drink stations, there were prizes galore for attendees to bid on.  All this was to benefit the great work done by Integrated Family Community Services, formerly Interfaith Community Services.  The funds raised at this event go a long way in financing the work done by IFCS, which provides basic human services and enrichment programs to low-income family members, using community resources. IFCS fosters self-sufficiency and respects the dignity of each client.

The event raised $144,000 and I can personally say, our group contributed in a huge way!  Jan & Jerry Selinfrieund presented a $10,000 check from Rotary and Francis Blizard made a substantial contribution as well, as a diamond sponsor. And all our attendees paid dearly for their auction items! It was a grand night for Highlands Ranch Rotary!

RI CONVENTION IN SEOUL KOREA

In 2016, Rotary International will be holding the International Convention in Seoul, Republic of Korea (ROK). The current projection is the meeting might exceed the current record attendance, which was in Osaka, Japan in 2004 and was 43,381. We are hoping to top 45,000 this coming year.

Rotarian Jim McGibney, Club 31, was appointed in 2011 to the position of Honorary Consul to the Republic of Korea in Colorado, and has worked to promote the relationship between Colorado and the ROK. The focus has been on Visa's, Driver license exchange, visiting Executives and much more.

For those that are interested in Seoul and Korea, Jim has developed a 30 minute program that he presented to the Rotary Club of Fort Collins and to the Denver Rotary Club. He is scheduled to give that program in Steamboat Springs in November.

If you have an interest or any questions on the program, please feel free to contact jim at jmcgibney@earthlink.net or by phone at 303-888-3689.  You can also watch a great (short) You Tube video for the convention at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbeRjRF-x0E.
