Fulfilling Our Goals For this Rotary Year

With the arrival of January, this Rotary year is half over. The past three weeks of Holiday celebrations have offered time to relax, to reflect on all our blessings and to connect with family and friends. Now, as days grow longer, we turn our attention to fulfilling our goals for this Rotary year:  personal goals, club goals and District goals and even Rotary International Goals.

Gary Huang set goals for all Rotarians. He asked that Polio Eradication remain our foremost obligation. A Polio Race, dressing in drag, speaker gifts and countless generous Rotarians will ensure we surpass our Polio Plus goal! He set membership growth as our second most important focus.  Our clubs are growing, there are new satellite “groups” developing and we are looking at the Satellite “club” option as a way for Rotary Extension into underserved areas of our district. Countless hours of work by PDG Dan Himelspach has resulted in two Enactments to be considered at “Council on Legislation” that will make clubs more flexible and attractive to new members. We must remain focused on attracting new members to Rotary so we will meet our goal of growing by 100 members this year.

Gary Huang asked every club to complete a project, local or international, in one of the six Areas of Focus. Our clubs have been incredibly active, beginning with the District grants experience this summer: 40% growths in grant applications and 50% growth in District Designated Fund (DDF) requests. Our continued generosity towards our Rotary Foundation is the key to reaching this year’s goal and ensuring continued support of ALL the projects our clubs propose.
Finally, Gary asked each club to participate in a “Rotary Day” to bring awareness of our service to our communities. Our District is working hard to improve Rotary Awareness. Peggy Halderman and Kathleen Stage, our Rotary Awareness and Technology chairs are developing the tools to collect and coordinate club information, allowing our clubs to tell their “Rotary Stories”. Our Return on Rotary project puts a dollar value on club service. For example, several clubs collaborated on a Health Fair for indigent residents of Douglas County. Over 160 Rotarians provided health screenings to 360 individuals, a service valued at over $40,000. A project in flood-ravaged Lyons, involving 70+ volunteers from six Rotary clubs, two Interact clubs and one Rotaract club, provided a value to the community over $62,000.  Not a dry eye was seen in the crowd acknowledging the service of our volunteers. There are so many stories to tell!
We have accomplished much yet much more remains to accomplish as we “Light Up Rotary”!

Thanks to ALL for you service!
Mary Jean and I wish all a Happy and Prosperous New Year!

Small Conversation Lights a Rotary Fire

What you do matters. Who you talk to, who you share with…these little moments of connectivity can completely change somebody’s trajectory. I know this feeling first hand, and it is my Rotary story. A few years ago at a holiday work party, my life was changed forever. I met my friend and future mentor, Ann Tull. The party was dull, but our conversation sparked a little light in me that completely transformed my life. Ann introduced me to Rotary, and eventually encouraged me to apply for the Ambassadorial Scholarship. What she didn’t know at that time is that I was desperate for a change, for a light, for something different. I started the application and realized that working toward higher education and a future that revolved around “Service Above Self” was what I was looking for. Fast forward a year of hard work and dedication and I was on my way to the United Nations University for Peace in Ciudad Colon, Costa Rica as an Ambassadorial Scholar for Rotary District 5450.

A series of articles by Lynn Hoffman and Jim Halderman

This article is about whose project is it? All to often a club’s project champion becomes so emotionally attached to the endeavor that basic leadership skills are set aside. Some symptoms are limited club involvement, assumption of club resources, and expectation of recognition. Another symptom may show up as difficulty in achieving the desired outcome or the feeling of a struggle.

Chicago Hosts First Rotary YP Summit

Chicago has been Rotary’s home since the very beginning, and in September Rotary International hoped it would be the home to new energy and ideas for our well-established organization. Thanks to funding from a major contributor, Chicago played host to the first Rotary Young Professionals Summit, a weekend featuring 32 young Rotarians and Rotaract leaders from around the United States. The goal of the YPS was to understand what more Rotary can do to attract other young professionals and to inspire Rotary’s next generation of leaders. The summit gave its attendees (the “YPSers”) a chance to share our thoughts and about and dreams for Rotary and to connect with one and another to exchange ideas.

Bringing Marketing Concepts to Rotary

Hoping that everyone had a special holiday season and are bringing in 2015 in good Rotary fashion, whatever that may be for you and yours. There is so much to be done in the world of Rotary membership each and every month of every year.

The marketing world has had the 4 Ps for decades. Well, it’s time for Rotary to have the 3 Ps of membership. Much like the 3-legged stool that requires all three legs to be intact in order for the stool to perform its role, membership requires the following 3 elements:

Plan, Proceed and Perpetuate

Visioning and District 5450

“Failing to plan, is planning to fail”. This is the ultimate truth and outcome of any organization or person if they don’t know where they are going. If you don’t know where you want to go, how will you ever know if you actually got there?

Every year the club President Elect completes a tool to help clubs assess their current state and goals for the current year. It is based on the Club Leadership Plan (245EN). This document asks you to decide where your club will be in three to five years. And this is exactly where Club Visioning can be of great help. The Visioning process helps the club leadership understand the wishes and desires of the club members and the direction the club wants to take with fundraising and service projects.
