Keystone-Be There!

District Conference is but two short months away! This is a time for Rotarians and guests to celebrate our accomplishment, learn from each other and network to make our world a better place. But above all we look forward to enjoying fellowship together.

I have chosen “Rotary in a Changing World” for our conference theme. Whether we agree or not, our World is changing and the effects of this change will fall hardest on those most vulnerable, those we work to benefit. Rotary provides a worldwide network of individuals uniquely qualified to begin an independent discussion of what must be done to adjust to these changes.

Chuck Kutscher, an international climate expert, will present the latest science, why it is serious and what we can do about it. Carrie Hessler-Radelet, Peace Corps Director, will lead a panel discussion of experts in Water, Medicine, Agriculture and Economic Development in what Rotary must do to adjust to these challenges as we work to bring a better productive and peaceful life to all humanity. Jerry Tinianow, Denver’s Sustainability chief will present his view of the future in sustainable development.

May 5, 2015 marks the one-year anniversary of the innovative Rotary/Peace Corps collaboration. Rotary International General Secretary John Hewko will join Carrie Hessler-Radelet in celebrating this partnership and hopefully signing a three-year extension of this significant agreement. We are indebted to Sue Fox and others for their five-year quest to make this happen. We will hear from the youth of our district and enjoy the ever-popular Youth Exchange talent show.
All in all, I am sure Rotarians will find this an enjoyable weekend at the lovely Keystone Conference Center and Keystone Lodge and Spa. Please join you fellow Rotarians as we enjoy fine entertainment, inspiring speakers, highlight special programs and projects and honor Clubs and Rotarians for outstanding efforts to “LIGHT UP ROTARY”!

Spend Time with Rotarians from 17 Time Zones!

Our own Rotary eClub One – the first in the world – is coming back to Boulder.  You can join their annual dinner, they will be at the District Conference AND they have organized three day trips in our beautiful State.  Sure you already know your wonderful State of Colorado, but this might be the perfect opportunity to spend time with members of an e-club to learn how they function and hear some great stories some of the members would love to share.  And of course you could share your own success stories for them to take home wherever this might be in the 17 time zones they reside in.
There are still a few spaces available, see http://rotaryeclubone.org/about/backtoboulder/.   Sign up today!

It is my pleasure to announce to our District the results of the District Governor Nominating Committee. Let me first thank those committee members for their hard work: Dan Himelspach, Mike Klingbiel, Jim Halderman, Karen Briggs and Lin Miklas.

Their choice is a ten-year Rotarian who served as his club’s president in 2010-2011. He has served his club in many ways but primarily in Fund Raising and Membership. His service to the district includes Assistant Governor for the past four years and service on the district membership team for which he created the membership tracking tool allowing us to recognize membership trends for each club and give support where really needed. This past year he has been my representative to all clubs in preparing and hosting the Area Assemblies.

It is my pleasure and honor to announce as our District Governor 2017-2018 William A. (Bill) Downes, member of the Mountain Foothills Rotary Club.

Congratulations Bill!!

To Engage Your Members Is Critical

Are you ready for Stage 4 -- the Engagement stage? The activities, outreach and oversight by club leaders of engaging your club’s member is tantamount to having a healthy club. The things that your club does to engage members from the time they are inducted makes it that much harder for them to exit out the back door. Our district has worked on bringing in new members through flexibility and innovation (e.g. satellite groups) and yet we haven’t figured out the “keeping them” or retention part of it.

As we gather here today, let us be thankful to those dedicated to the principles of Rotary through their shining example of love, leadership and gift of giving.

As we reflect on the image that indicates who we are, the spokes of our Rotary wheel are representative of the rules of pure conduct. We pray justice will be their uniform length, wisdom the circle, modesty and thoughtfulness the hub in which the immovable axle of truth is fixed.

All those who recognize the existence of suffering, its cause, its remedy, and its cessation have recognized the four noble truths that bind us as Rotarians. We pray that we walk upon the right path, that the right view will be the torch to light our way, the right aspirations will be our guide, right speech will be our dwelling place on the road to helping others, and that contemplation on the right efforts will give us peace that follows.

As our Rotary wheel rolls forward, it is moving with the same strength as Rotarians of years gone by and those of today who continue to keep the hope of Rotary alive. Rotary can only be as strong as the building blocks of the Rotarians who truly care and dedicate themselves to “Service Above Self.”

May the enduring spirit of Rotary inspire us today and may we wisely use our theme of “Light Up Rotary” to light up the world and move forward in bringing peace and understanding to everyone.

Why should we join the Points Match Challenge?

Why are we doing a Points Challenge Match? Below you will see an analysis of the donations to the Annual Fund Share over the past 10 years. As you can see, since the “GREAT RECESSION”, donations to the Annual Fund have been flat at approximately $410,000. During the Pilot Program introducing the New Grants Model, we were not doing as many grants as in the past. Beginning in 2013-2014 with the New Grants Model, we are now back to the same level of activity as before. Indeed, the grant applications for this year asked for more matching dollars (DDF) than we had to spend.

and the Whole World Smiles with You!

“What sunshine is to flowers, smiles are to Humanity.  These are but trifles, to be sure; but scattered along life’s pathway the good they do is inconceivable.”   This comment, by Joseph Addison explains why Past Rotary International President, Kalyan Banerjee, added the Million Smiles a Day campaign as part of his wish for all Rotarians during his year as President.  Kalyan asked that: “Club members – along with their families, friends, and colleagues – should consciously give one smile per day to another person through a good deed or gesture.  As more people commit to little acts of kindness each day, the global benefit becomes enormous.”

Membership Wisdom

Did you know that there are forums or topic-oriented groups on the Rotary.org website? I subscribe to several that are focused on membership and the following post from a fellow Rotarian showed up and I believe that it should be shared with you and for you to share with your club. I suggest that someone read this aloud several times during the year, use it when speaking with prospective members AND use it for your conversations with tenured members who need to remain engaged and active in the club.

Join the “ROTARY RIDERS” team and Bike MS Colorado.

If you like to ride or want to train and ride longer distances, this is a great opportunity. Members of the Rotary Club of Parker and Denver Southeast have been doing this ride for many years and we’d now like to have more of our fellow Rotarians join us!

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society puts on a great catered bike ride as one of their major fundraisers. This year’s Colorado ride is from Westminster to Fort Collins on June 27th with the return on June 28th.

Applicants Being Sought

To all 5450 Rotarians involved in grant projects under all areas of service:
As you work with non-Rotarians in the US or other countries on your grant projects, don’t forget to be on the lookout for qualified applicants who could benefit from either a 90 day Professional Certificate program or a two year Master’s Degree program by way of the World Peace Fellowship. Many of the non-Rotarians with whom you work on your Club grant projects, would make outstanding beneficiaries of the World Peace Fellowship.  Even if they reside in another country, we can help them apply from the 5450 World Peace Committee.  Please think of them and us and let me know if I can help or answer questions.  Applications are due no later than May 15, 2015.

From the time we started taping boxes together at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 15 to loading the boxes full of flowers at Coors Field parking lot beginning at 7:00 a. m. on Monday, February 16 it was a labor of love for those not able to attend the show. Can Your Club Help?

In the summer of 2013, the Rotary Club of Denver Southeast (DSE) embarked on a Signature Project with Easter Seals Colorado (ESC), which included significant renovations to ESC’s camp kitchen facilities and the launch of a new RYLA program, adapted for teens with physical disabilities.  This “RYLA Plus program has now operated successfully for the last two years at ESC’s camp, Rocky Mountain Village, in Empire, Colorado.  This is not the first time that Rotary and Easter Seals have joined together to help disabled children. Check out this short YouTube video to see what it’s all about: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7cxP9c3WbY
