DECEMBER 2015
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

The Holiday Season is a time for us to stop and count our blessings and be thankful.  As Earl and I prepare to leave for Texas to be with our son and family for Thanksgiving I want to tell each of you how thankful we both are for being able to meet far more wonderful Rotarians this past 5 months than would have been possible otherwise.

We have heard of countless projects being carried out by 5450 Rotarians; been invited to induct new members into this - the best District in Rotaryland; celebrate new Paul Harris Fellows; and witness the chartering of three new Interact Clubs.

I am humbled and grateful to be your District Governor. Now as RIP Ravi stated in the latest ROTARIAN, "By sending joy out into the world, we do not sacrifice it for ourselves - we only multiply it.  As we enter the season of giving, let us multiply the gifts we have been given by sharing them with others. Through acts of caring, kindness, and generosity, in our clubs and through our Foundation, we become and remain a gift to the world."

YOU'VE GOT THAT ROTARY FEELING

In the September 2015 issue of The Rotarian RI President Ravi wrote “It is time to sharpen our tools. Instead of focusing on the question, ‘How can we bring more members into Rotary?’ we should be asking ourselves, ‘How can we add more value to Rotary membership so that more will join and fewer will leave?’ “

My counterpart in District 5810 (Dallas area), Howard Templin, recently shared this thought “I’ve thought a lot about membership.  With all the systems and processes we try to bring (to our clubs) it still comes down to this: inspiring individual members to look at everyone they meet and ask themselves ‘would this person be a good Rotarian?.’  Inspire them to wear their pin, engage in conversations about Rotary and ask people to join.”

POLIO COMMITTEE UPDATE

Hoping you all had a wonderful, restful and rejuvenating Thanksgiving.  And now, on to December which marks the end of 2015, and the half way point for our District 5450 Rotary year - a good time to evaluate your personal and Club Polio Plus funding goals.  We want to encourage you to attend the President's Dinner on Saturday, January 9th, 2016.  This is a great opportunity to begin the New Year:  meet RI President K.R. (Ravi) Ravindran and be inspired by his energy and vision; and get the most recent information about the End Polio Now campaign from Rachel Lonsdale with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.  The District registration site offers the chance to make a donation to Polio. Just click on the "Donate to Polio" link.  You will be given individual and Club credit for your donation.

Last year, all but two clubs in District 5450 donated to the End Polio Now fund.  We are encouraging 100% participation of our clubs to meet this top priority of Rotary International.  We will keep you posted, starting in January, on how we are doing towards the goal set by the district Polio Committee.  Please help!

RI CONVENTION IN SEOUL KOREA

In 2016, Rotary International will be holding the International Convention in Seoul, Republic of Korea (ROK). The current projection is the meeting might exceed the current record attendance, which was in Osaka, Japan in 2004 and was 43,381. We are hoping to top 45,000 this coming year.

Rotarian Jim McGibney, Club 31, was appointed in 2011 to the position of Honorary Consul to the Republic of Korea in Colorado, and has worked to promote the relationship between Colorado and the ROK. The focus has been on Visa's, Driver license exchange, visiting Executives and much more.

For those that are interested in Seoul and Korea, Jim has developed a 30 minute program that he presented to the Rotary Club of Fort Collins and to the Denver Rotary Club. He is scheduled to give that program in Steamboat Springs in November.

If you have an interest or any questions on the program, please feel free to contact jim at jmcgibney@earthlink.net or by phone at 303-888-3689.  You can also watch a great (short) You Tube video for the convention at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbeRjRF-x0E.
