December is Family of Rotary Month!

The season of shortened light and colder temperatures is upon us. Our thoughts turn to family and friends. It is little surprise that December is “Family of Rotary”. Mary Jean and I look to the Thanksgiving week as a time to step back, to rest a bit from our hectic schedule and reflect on the events of the past 5 months. We are so very thankful for our blessings. We want to thank all of you who have worked so hard to make this a special year for us.

After nearly three years of preparing for this adventure, we jumped in on July 1st, having begun two weeks earlier with several club President’s induction ceremonies. Our first two and one half months were consumed with visits to nearly thirty of our smaller clubs. We met many wonderful, dedicated Rotarians who were doing impactful projects. It was so fulfilling to learn about these clubs’ involvement in and support of their communities.

In September, our district played host to Rotarians from nine states for the Zone 21b-27 Institute. The selfless work of our host committee and countless volunteers made this an experience to remember. We heard many compliments and expressions of gratitude from Rotarians. We can be very proud of our district. The “All Club Luncheon”, which I was honored to lead, was an experience I shall never forget. The sight of RI President Gary, perched on a mechanical bull with a giant black cowboy hat as a crown, was priceless.

Mary Jean and I have been invited to many special club events; fund raisers, new member inductions, Paul Harris Fellow inductions and much more. We have experienced, hands-on community service projects; preparing a community meal in Summit County, working on flood cleanup in Big Elk Meadows, rebuilding the town hall plaza in Lyons. We have attended Rotary days that doubled as club fundraisers: Conifer’s BBQ competition, Niwot’s October Fest, Boulder Rotary/YMCA beer and BBQ fest, Denver’s Branch Rickey Award, Highland Ranch’s Gala. We have traveled to Nebraska to honor my DG classmate Koby who became a major donor.  We have greeted our new Exchange students at the welcoming BBQ and spent time with RYLArians in Estes Park and welcomed two classes of young RYLArians in the Black Forrest. We were even successful in achieving the full YRYLA circle sit down…and getting back up!

We have completed the Area Assemblies. We have heard of important projects, shared our goals and dreams for our district and the Rotary world. We have listened as clubs discussed significant issues, look to each other for ideas on membership, projects, fund-raisers, programs and many other subjects as we all work to make our clubs and district stronger and more impactful.

Yes this is a very special time of year. We thank every one of you for your support and friendship. A special thanks to your families and loved one. We recognize their generosity in sharing you with all of us in Rotary! Mary Jean and I wish you

Happy Holidays!

Learning from the Satellite Summit & Vetting Prospective Members

What an exciting month November was for our District 5450! We had net positive growth and held the first ever Satellite Summit (perhaps in all of Rotary).

First, let’s look at some key learnings and insights that we heard at the Satellite Summit. There were 39 in attendance (53 registered) in spite of the bad weather and roads. Five Rotary clubs that have a satellite in place whether it has been three years or three months shared their experiences with all of us. Also, we received valuable and repeated confirmations as to what is attractive to the satellite members (who are full Rotarians of the “host” or “mother” club) for being drawn to the satellite group.  The majority of the satellites have younger Rotarians (under 40); however, and this is a big however, satellites are not only for younger Rotarians.

Every Rotarian Every Year!

As many of you now know, the district has issued a rebate on the dues each club paid in Rotary Year 2013-2014. Because of a very successful District Conference supported by record numbers of our Rotarians, increasing membership and revenue from dues paid by those new members and careful financial management by our district, this rebate was made possible.

I have mentioned our experience with grants since the end of the pilot period and the beginning of the “New Grants Model”. District grant applications have increased dramatically and in turn so has the requested DDF match. But donations to the Annual Fund, from whence DDF comes, have NOT increased. On average over the last 10 years, 47% of our Rotarians are not making a donation to the Annual Fund each year.

A Match Made in Rotary Awareness Heaven!

The results of the November 10 “Satellite Summit” confirmed:  At our fingertips, we have the best way to introduce Rotary to prospective members who lie in the fringes of various Rotary Clubs in District 5450 -  “satellites.”

So, what is a “satellite”?  A “satellite” is a separate Rotary operational unit that is organized by an interested group along with an individual Rotary Club.  It is set up with different meeting times/locations, structures, and activities and is tailored to serve those in a community who cannot meet the standard Rotary Club schedules and expectations.  It is considered to be part of an existing Rotary Club for membership purposes and generally covers the same geographic area as the sponsoring Rotary Club.  (See site link on District website for “Satellite Groups.”)

District 5450 Work Day in Lyons

On November 8th, 2014, a little over a year after the devastating flood of September 12th, 2013, Rotarians from all over District 5450 came to Lyons to work on rebuilding the Lyons Town Hall Plaza and fix up the exterior of the Town Hall. This also represented the culmination of my fund raising efforts with contributions from the District 5450 Flood Relief Fund. Over $30,000 was raised thanks to the generosity of Rotarians and friends throughout the District. Total rebuilding budget for the Town Hall and Plaza is approximately $60,000 and with your contributions and those from the Town itself and Honeywell Hometown Solutions providing project management, it was possible to get this done.

Ambulance Gateway processes 10th ambulance!

On Sept 7, 2014, members of Rotary clubs from San Francisco (US), Aurora (US), Juarez (MX), and Aguascalientes (MX) helped Ambulance Gateway deliver a “new” ambulance to the Universidad Tecnologica de Aguascalientes in Zacatecas, Mex.  The ambulance was donated by Falck Northern California, an innovative private health care organization in the San Francisco area, and was received with great fanfare and festivities by representatives of the university in El Paso, TX.

The ambulance will be put into use by the university’s paramedic training program which also provides emergency medical service to the campus (7000 students) as well as part of the city of Aguascalientes (population 1.2 million).  The program’s training/employment/service format is a model that is being replicated across Mexico and this ambulance doubles their service and training capacity.

District 5450 Proposes to Give Clubs More Flexibility

Membership – attraction and retention.  You have all heard the message by now. Rotary, including this Zone and District, has a membership issue. If we don’t successfully confront this issue Rotary will continue to lose members and change in ways we will not find pleasant or acceptable.  Let’s respond to changing circumstances effecting Rotary in a controlled and positive way before negative changes are forced upon us. Last year, this district was one of only a few in North America with significant growth but we are a long way from a membership plan that works and is sustainable.

Membership is ultimately a Club responsibility and only at the Club level can something productive be instituted.  However Rotary International must give our Clubs the freedom to structure membership requirements in a way that best fits their community and serves to attract and retain members.  Clubs should have the opportunity to freely change the structure of their regular meetings, eliminate attendance requirements, and disregard the classification system.  Clubs should be able to hold their regular meetings at more than one location, at different times and with an optional meal.  Given the opportunity our Rotarians will devise creative ways to reduce the cost and time commitment yet retain the quality and value of Rotary membership.
